The Hills Have Eyes is an updated version of Wes Cravens 1977 film. It revolves around a neglected military base no longer in use, that was once used for nuclear testing. But has long since been abandoned, and home to a 'family' of mutants. The opening scene consists of an injured man, pleading for help, then being brutally crushed by a large man baring a pickaxe. We then meet a family, travelling from Ohio to San Diego for the eldest member's silver wedding anniversary. Attending the event with them are their two daughters, one with their husband, and their son - along with their two dogs.
When the family stop at the gas station to reload on fuel, a mysterious figure resemblent to the murderer at the beginning of the film swiftly steals the son Bobby's red sweatshirt - the first sighting of the vicious killers, this also tells us that they are extremely agile and cunning. After this, the family once again set off in their SUV, this time heading through the 'secret' shortcut via the Yuma Flats base. Things take a dramatic turn for the worst though when their tires are punctured by make shift road spikes, and the family suddenly begin to panic.
Realizing that they need to return to the gas station for assistance the family set off on foot, until a group of super-powered mutants begin a series of disturbing attacks, each one cleverly co-ordinated, and completed using incredible strength and stealth. Causing a substantial amount of blood to be shed. The Hills Have Eyes' scariest aspect isn't just that the mutants are incredibly strong, but the fact that they are also clever and can communicate. They may not even physically be involved with someone's death, but instead lay a trap. Like the spikes in the road. Each one, unexpected and gruesome. Also knowing that there is a baby at risk, everyone puts their lives in danger for the young girl, not taking into consideration their own well-being. Regardless of the situation. Even though they're living prey.
